Yahoo buys Tumblr for $1.1B ! Good Deal!!

Posted by elhardoum On 7:40 PM No comments

Yahoo announced Monday that it will pay $1.1B cash to purchase Tumblr, a blogging service that says it has massed more than 50 billion posts from 108 million blogs. Yahoo is buying online blogging forum Tumblr for $1.1 billion as CEO Marissa Mayer tries to rejuvenate an internet icon that had fallen behind the times.
The deal announced Monday represents Mayer's boldest move yet since she left Google 10 months ago to lead Yahoo's latest comeback attempt. It marks Yahoo's most expensive acquisition since the Sunnyvale, Calif., company bought online search engine Overture a decade ago for $1.3 billion in cash and stock.
Yahoo is paying all cash for Tumblr, dipping into some of its remaining stash from a $7.6 billion windfall reaped last year from selling about half of its stake in Chinese internet company Alibaba Holdings Group. Taking over Tumblr will devour about one-fifth of the $5.4 billion in cash that Yahoo had in its accounts at the end of March.marissa mayer twitter yahoo tumblr

20-year-old, De Forest was the bookies favourite leading into the final. Speaking on Danish Television, De Forest said “This is totally fantastic…I’m so happy”.
Azerbaijan’s Farid Mammadov came in second and Ukraine’s Zlata Ognevich was third with the songGravity.

A Soyuz spacecraft carrying two U.S. astronauts and a Russian cosmonaut back to earth from the International Space Station landed safely in Kazakhstan today.
The spacecraft, containing Russian commander Fyodor Yurichikhin and NASA's Douglas Wheelock and Shannon Walker touched down as planned at 4.45am GMT north of the remote central Kazakh town of Arkalyk.
'We have a landing!' flashed the flight monitoring screens at mission control just outside Moscow.
All three crew members were in good health.

Photo: Angelina Jolie has revealed she underwent a double mastectomy as a prevention measure after a blood test showed she was genetically susceptible to cancer. "The truth is I carry a faulty gene, BRCA1, which sharply increases my risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer," she wrote in an op-ed for The New York Times. Jolie, 37, lost her mother (pictured) at the age of 56 to the disease, and said she did not want her six children to face the same grief. Over three months, she had both breasts removed and reconstructed. "On a personal note, I do not feel any less of a woman," she wrote.

Google have updated the tagline of their Palestinian webpage from Palestinian Territories to Palestine:A great victory for palestinians!

Google replaces 'Palestinian Territories' with 'Palestine'
The modification on May 1 signalled a significant triumph for the Palestinian Authority, which has been campaigning for recognition as an independent state rather than Israeli occupied territories for several years.
“This is a virtual victory for Palestine - a step in the right direction that has to be followed by others, including Google Maps and Google Earth,” said Sabri Saidam, IT consultant to Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas.
Mr Saidam points out that many Palestinian villages with thousands of residents have been erased on Google Maps and replaced with nearby Israeli settlements, which are considered illegal under international law.
In November last year the United Nations General Assembly granted the non-contiguous Palestinian territories of East Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza non-member status, despite considerable opposition from the United States and Israel, who argue that a Palestinian state can only be created as a result of direct negotiations with their Israel rather than unilateral action.
Immediately after winning this victory at the UN, the Palestinian Authority issued letters to Google and other global corporations requesting that they change their drop-down menus to include Palestine among their index of countries.
“In most online menus you won’t find Palestine or even Palestinian territories among the national options. Palestinian users are still forced to choose between either Israel or Jordan,” Mr Saidam explained, adding that he hopes that Facebook, Microsoft and other online giants will follow Google’s lead.
Announcing Google’s change of policy on Friday, spokesman Nathan Tyler said: "We're changing the name 'Palestinian Territories' to 'Palestine' across our products. We consult a number of sources and authorities when naming countries.
"In this case, we are following the lead of the UN, Icann [the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers], ISO [International Organisation for Standardisation] and other international organisations."
Yigal Palmore, an Israeli foreign ministry spokesman, said the change raised questions “about the reasons behind this surprising involvement of what is basically a private internet company in international politics - and on the controversial side.”
